Merle Widmer has written another brilliant dissertation on his blog. I think Merle doesn't get as much commentary as he would like because he covers EVERY possible view and counter argument. Typically the only thing left to say is, "Good Job" or, "I hate you for being right."
Merle points out that it is way past time for the GOP to re-define itself, not because of any specific message Republicans have endorsed, but because so many extremists have become Republicans.
The average Republican is no more likely a fan of the religious right, the "moral majority," Fawell, or Robinson than the average Democrat is a racist Southerner, and a big fan of Jane Fonda or the late Spermin' Thurmond.
The Republican message should endorse self sufficiency and smaller government. Remember the Regan years when Republicans believed government promoted business and a stronger economy best by getting out of the way? Less pork, less government waste, less red tape, lower taxes. This should be the Republican Mantra.
I happen to be pro-life, but polls say 50% of the Republican Party is pro-choice. Even though I'm anti-abortion, I am repulsed by religious nut jobs claiming the GOP for themselves. These quacks don't speak for most conservatives and neither does that arrogant blowhard, Rush Limbaugh. John McCain represents me well. G. Gordon Liddy is the anti-Christ.
How many Democrats feel homosexual activists best represent them? How many Democrats supported gay marriage in the last election? BTW, I say let them get married. Why shouldn't they have to suffer like rest of us? (Okay, I stole that last line from Dolly Parton. Love that woman.)
In addition to returning to the basics, Compassionate Conservatism should embrace protecting the environment and providing better education for America's young. After all, why should any one political party have sole claim to what is inherently decent?
If your mind is too open, your brain will fall out. Warning: Names, identities, descriptions, and pictures have been changed and/or used to protect the innocent as well as the guilty. PollyPeoria should not be used or quoted as a source for your senior college thesis.

Ameriquest. Proud sponsor of the American Dream. My ass.
Most of us would agree, occasionally Corporate America goes too far.
Disney's attempt to build a theme park near a Civil War cemetery in the South comes to mind. I read Eisner wanted the rides to have an anti-slavery theme.
Enron. The entire debacle. Mind blowing not in just because of the arrogance and deceit of the executives involved, but that NO ONE caught on until a Wall Street Journal reporter sat down, read the fine print in the prospectus, and said, "Uh, guys, how exactly do you make money?"
My latest Corporate gripe? Branding. I know this is old. Allowing corporations signage at ball parks has gone on for awhile. Has anyone adjusted to Pepsi Center? Staples Arena? Coors Field? What about Wrigley Field, you say? The Wrigley Family built and owned the park. They didn't just pay some hard up government body to slap their name on it. Some cities now allow bridges and streets to be named after Corporations. Doesn't Bloomington have Krispy Kreme Way? At least the whores -er, I mean- local governments, involved get some money for putting out.
Now we have corporations sponsoring things that may not even exist, let alone something they have branding rights too. Watching baseball with my significant other (White Sox, Astros, Cardinals, couldn't give a damn. I was just hanging out for a back massage.) I learned Ameriquest Mortgage is "Proud Sponsor of the American Dream."
Ameriquest sponsors the American Dream? Huh. See, I thought I was the sponsor. You and me both. By going to work, paying bills, saving to put kids through college, investing in the stock market, complaining at the pump, adding to my 401k, making the mortgage payment, putting food on the table, etc. Many of us sponsor the American Dream. We have since we were 16, put on the double knit polyester McDonald's uniform, worked the fryer, in order to buy our first piece of crap automobile. Frankly, Ameriquest's claim to the title, "Proud Sponsor of the American Dream" Pisses me off. If I am an American (check), I have a dream - say - starting a chain of espresso massage parlors (check), and Ameriquest fails to sponsor me with a loan, can I sue for false advertising? Note to self. Call Chase.
If I ever need to refinance my mortgage, (HA! Did it a couple of years ago when rates were really, really low, you greedy corporate scum floss.) I'm not going to use the arrogant weenie wads at Ameriquest.
So there.

Saved by C.J. and our City Council
You must read this gem by C.J. Summers at Summers in Peoria.
Flower baskets on Main Street.
Check.
Outlaw scourge of motorized scooters.
Check.
What about belly button lint?
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, WHEN IS CITY COUNCIL GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT BELLY BUTTON LINT?! Belly button lint build up is a big problem in Peoria. Belly button lint is flammable for Godsakes!
That's it. Look for me to appear at "Citizens Turn to Address City Council" portion of tonight's meeting at City Hall. I will be the one in the orange flame retardant hazmat suit.

Bill Dennis has finally stopped playing with his thingy...
About time too, sometimes there are so many typos in his postings I think he may be going blind ;-)
Yes, William has finally stopped messing with his blog, has ditched us losers at blogsplot, and can be found at peoriapundit.com once again.
Bill is already back to harassing me for harassing Councilwoman VanAuken, on whom I believe he has a huge crush. He denies it, but isn't fooling anyone. No one doubts Barbara is extremely bright Bill, you have every right to fall for her.
For the record, I believe that VanAuken does return calls and e-mails- when she receives them. I just think she does what she wants (water company vote, Station 11) instead of what her constituents instruct her to do. I also think Teplitz was much, much worse. My frustration with VanAuken at this moment stems from her lack of fight to restore Fire Station 11 to full capacity. I was at a forum where VanAuken said Fire Station 11 was critical to the people in her district, that Teplitiz's vote had endangered citizens, and if elected, Barbara would make Station 11 a priority. Plenty of campaign flyers stating essentially the same thing were distributed on her behalf. I personally know three fire fighters who campaigned for her who are pissed. They believe their lives are jeopardized by the current cuts and strange distribution of fire fighting equipment. Seriously, whoever heard of a Fire Station without a water truck?! The water truck is the one with the friggin hoses, used to put out FIRES. I also know that the City could find an annual revenue stream of $750,000 by cutting waste if they were so inclined. Hell, the Municipal Band gets $100,000 - and polkas certainly don't count as an essential service. Council seems to be in favor of a tax increase, but not enough of one to restore fire fighting capabilities to safe levels. Have these people learned nothing from Hurricane Katrina?
I also remember VanAuken chastising Teplitz for saying the garbage fee was "only" $6.00 per month. VanAuken told the audience using the word "only" was indicative of a leader who had forgotten the needs of her constituents, many of whom were on fixed incomes. Yet, Barbara hasn't mentioned eliminating the garbage tax (which doesn't pay for garbage pickup). These were the issues VanAuken ran on, these are the issues we have every right to hold her accountable for, ahem, Bill.
However, adequate fire protection is more important than the slimy garbage tax. So, I'm putting the pressure on Manning. If Councilman Manning can dissect the water company's books and find certain revenue, despite the outrageous $300 million price tag, finding a paltry $750,000 of local government waste to restore Station 11 should be a cake walk. So, how about it Bob?

Damn Fine Question, Ms. Wiltz!
From Saturday's Letters to the Editor, Journal Star:
I would like someone from the city administration or City Council to explain how a big project like the Murray Baker Bridge can be completed in six months but a one-mile stretch of Forrest Hill, from University to Sterling, cannot be completed in two years. Doesn't the city require performance bonds? The contractor working from the Forrest Hill overpass to Sterling has shown no regard for those of us who use this street. The portion of the road we are required to drive on is so very rough that it wreaks havoc with our car shocks and suspension. I have never before experienced anything like it.
On many days there have been no workers present. This stretch is essential for students going back and forth to Woodrow Wilson School. A viable business that had many years of success, Velvet Freeze, was forced to close because two years was too long to withstand the financial impact this project caused.
We lived through the Sterling improvement and have nothing but praise for the Walsh Company and its workers. I used to think we should always give local companies priority consideration, but if it is going to result in such inept handling then they should be put at the very bottom of any contract list.
A performance bond should always be required with a timely date of completion set. We deserve to know when this project will be finished. The road east of Sterling isn't half done and it has been torn up since April.

Didn't Gary Sandberg bring this up at a recent Council meeting? I have a sick feeling buying the water company would solve the problem....

Autocracy is a form of government in which unlimited power is held by a single individual. An emperor may rise to power through heredity, but is referred to as an autocrat rather than a monarch when his power overshadows his bloodline.
The term autocrat is derived from the Greek word autokratĂ´r (lit. "self-ruler", "ruler of one's self"). Today it is usually seen as synonymous to despot, tyrant and/or dictator, though each of these terms originally had a separate and distinct meaning (see their respective articles).

Recall Van Auken
Barbara Van Auken sent out campaign lit stating her predecessor should be tossed from office because of her Station 11 vote. The campaign piece claimed that Station 11 was vital to public safety and Marcella had endangered the Second District by voting to take crucial equipment out of service. Now that Barbara has the seat, there are other priorities. Like preserving the stupid flower baskets dripping from light posts on Main Street. (Talk about putting lipstick on a pig.)
Bob Manning and Bill Spears merely said the Fire Chief should have been allowed to make the decision as to where Fire Department budget cuts should be made, not the Council. It's disappointing that the new guys won't bring back Station 11 to full capacity, but we can't say they out and out lied.
Van Auken is a disappointment. I know people who worked hard on her campaign who say she doesn't give them the time of day now. Added to my Station 11 annoyance is Van Auken's reversal on buying the water company and her condescending speeches. I'm thinking I'm not the only one experiencing voter's remorse.
I want to like Van Auken, I do. However, knowing that Station 11 was a primary reason for her election and also why Firefighters turned out en mass to work on her campaign, I'm beginning to feel Van Auken is just another political hack who uses people. Imagine Marcella Teplitz turning liberal and chain smoking. You'd have Van Auken. Someone who picks her favorites and ignores the rest, thinking she's fooling people.
I know Bill Dennis will rip me a new one for saying this, but I'm already sick of her. Time for a recall.

Gulley vs. Schock. Just what we needed... A good laugh.
Upon reading the headline in this morning's newspaper, I laughed so hard coffee came out my nose. If anyone is curious about my identity -to be honest, there are no indications anyone is- attend the campaign debates between these two. I will be at every one I possibly can, most likely with a video camera in hand to record for posterity the consequences of straying out of one's league. (Imagine Pauley Shore asking Katherine Zeta Jones to prom.)
Bill Dennis beat me to it, but this race will be fine entertainment. God help the Unions if Bill Spears doesn't leap into this race. They will be stuck campaigning for Gulley, who falls ever so slightly above plant life on the intelligence scale. Schock, on the other hand, is smart. I know many feel he hasn't done enough in Springfield or is too young to wield the power he does, but the kid is bright and everyone knows it.
There couldn't be a bigger mismatch in the oratory department. As Bill Dennis wrote this morning, Gulley has a hard time stringing a few words together let alone a complete sentence. Gulley's verbal skills are a political train wreck. I wince every time he raises his hand at City Council, knowing that nothing but embarrassment will follow. In the other corner, we have Schock, master of oratory (I was going to write "master debater" but I didn't want the way too easy sophomoric commentary). Aaron can give a fluent, succinct and nearly entertaining speech without once checking his notes.
To the other four candidates that ran for Gulley's council seat, take heart. Gulley is about to be put properly in his place. I disagree with Bill Dennis on his prediction that Gulley will take most of the black vote. Gulley received only slightly more than half of the vote in his last election. Had there not been so many candidates running against him in the Primary, the General Election would have yielded far different results. Greg Banks emerged a primary winner to face off against Gulley, but just barely. If memory serves, Banks came out ahead about six votes in front of June Moore. Gulley isn't beloved, just lucky his inaptitude pushed so many people into the race which split the vote.
That won't happen this time. Schock will focus on the fact that of the six bills he has sponsored, all have passed. Except for one waiting, they have received Blago's signature. One Schock sponsored bill allows those on public aid to apply for state grant money to attend college. Think low income, single mom, trying to better herself and join the tax base. Schock is also responsible for the bill allowing deployed national guard members to pay less pay roll tax, a bill that Ricca Sloan screwed up before being boot kicked out of office.
George Ryan will hurt Schock. The timing of his Trial, and subsequent conviction, will remind voters of past Republican dirty deeds. However, Blago is the subject of about six investigations himself at the moment. (Power Washing Scandal, Teacher's Retirement Fund Scandal, Political Appointment/Father-in-law Scandal, etc...) Moreover, look for Aaron to point out the recent Democratic raid of state worker retirement funds to plug the budget. The Democratic majority in Springfield didn't cut spending, they didn't raise taxes, they just stole. Taxpayers will repay the retirement accounts along with 8% interest, but won't begin payments for several years. One billion borrowed now will cost us $38 billion in the long run. Moreover, realizing it was an election year, the Democrats stole enough for next year's budget too. Brilliant. Considering the pension raiding, it is hard to fathom labor unions supporting Democrats this time around. Look for local unions to support individuals, while roasting their own party. Fun! Fun! Fun!
The only thing Spears and Gulley have going for them is that they were not a part of the Democratic majority who pulled this crap. To beat Schock, Spears and Gulley will have to pull away from their own party. Painful to do, I'm sure, but quite enjoyable to watch. Spears may point out (I doubt it will dawn on Gulley) the horrific debt accrued, unbeknownst to Schock, by District 150 while Aaron served as School Board President.
I still say the very smart and humble Spears has a chance against the Republican Boy Wonder if he is willing to vigorously campaign. Of course, Spears will have to step up to the plate and declare he is actually running. Most who voted for him would probably admit- as smart as Aaron is, they would feel better sending someone to Springfield who didn't still require Clearsil and was at least old enough to shave.
