Where's the love for Betty?

Betty Friedan. I know she wasn't a funny filthy comic who used drugs or set herself on fire, but gosh, she did lead a revolution and wrote a book -several books, actually- that changed the lives of many for the better. I read the Feminine Mystique in college. I can't say that I agreed with everything she did, but what an eye opener. Does anyone know if there are there any schools or streets in Peoria named for her? How about a memorial service in her hometown? It will be interesting to see if Mayor Ardis says anything about her passing tonight at City Council. AHEM! If not, I'm pretty sure we can count on Councilwoman VanAuken.

I'd go on and on about this, but I couldn't do a better job than SnazzyBird did here.

Polly,
The PJS reported as if she didn't visit Peoria, hated us etc. I know that she did visit Peoria in the recent past and for more than just Harriet Parkhurst's funeral. In fact, she and Harriet had a little girls weekend in Peoria at least once that I know of before Harriet passed away. The fact that she sought to and was able to come in under the radar and spend quality time with her friends and visit as any of us would is a compliment to Betty as much as to Peoria.

I wouldn't doubt that Barbara VanAuken knew of those visits. The two recent deaths of Richard Pryor and Better Friedan, two people who pushed the envelope and were recognized for doing so internationally and Peoria's general failure to grasp or acknowledge those two properly causes one to pause and ask several questions, not the least of which is whether the acknowledgment would have been greater had either of these two been a white, anglo-saxon, protestantm, male politician or former athlete.

It's sad.

Hey Chase-where ya livin now??

Chase,
The most recent rumor is you are moving to Detroit. If so good luck. If not, DARN!

I didn't think I'd ever say this but I'd have to agree that if that is in fact Polly in the profile shot she is attractive and certainly not likely to wear the control top panty hose she complains of often.

Yes. That is really my picture, cleverly taken to hide my tummy pooch. Control pantyhose are in order, I promise you.

I decided to post my pic not so much as to reveal who I am, but to end speculation as to who I am NOT.

See. I told you I was nobody. No. I'm not putting myself down - you know what I mean.

I have gotten several e-mails from individuals who have been accused of being Polly and have had to take the heat for my negative/critical/posts/opinions.

Plus, my boss stumbled on to my blog, called me into his office and said, "I don't believe our organization is the charitable version of Enron, but I like your blog. I want you to know that as long as you don't use the company name or logo in any of your postings or the real names of any employees, you won't have any problems from me or the company regarding it. Also, I'm very sorry you're unhappy here. Think about it, and let me know what we can do to, if anything, to remedy that."

Oh... Er... Uh... Kind of caught me off guard on that one, Boss. Polly has been spending a lot of time re-evaluating her opinions of her workplace.

I will post on the whole Junction City situation once the ink is dry on the deal(s). Seems to good to be true.

Huh. A euro-savior coming in and buying a troubled, crime ridden strip mall, sprinkling fairy dust and turning it into an artsy fartsy hot spot... now THAT would never happen on the East Bluff or South Side!

Huh? So you had this miraculous journey through Marine boot camp, a journey that I think it would be fair to say only occurred in your mind. A war breaks out and they let a model Marine such as yourself leave to attend law school? Were you in the reserves? Stationed anywhere after boot camp? Why didn't they keep you as an enlisted man? I thought the military, particularly the Marines was funny that way. You know, you sign up, they send you to boot camp, you complete boot camp as you stated you did, and they in turn expect you to serve.

It's not wise to disgrace the military and in particular the Marines Ingersoll.

Typical Chase, avoid the issues and leave out the facts! Nice response. When do you move? Some of us want to plan a party.

The DD214 won't say why you were discharged. You could have been honorably discharged before your time was up for a variety of reasons. It could have been immediately after book camp and before you ever served anywhere. Is that what happened? I think the question anonymous asked you was why? or Why didn't you serve the full term you signed up for initially?

You are the one who opened the topic of your interesting past Chase. Obviously people are interested in the details. Maybe the military saw things in a young Chase many Peorians were a little slow to see? Maybe you are afraid to admit that they did? Just another example of you "washing" out of another chapter in your life? Tell us Chase. We remain interested in the ever fascinating details of your life.

To get back on topic, what if anything is the City Council plan to do to honor Betty? You kind of have to chuckle at the thought but wouldn't Betty have ripped old Gomer Pyle Ingersoll a new one.

Nice unrelated blabber about your non-existent military career Gomer. Add it to your book of non-existent careers and other failures. And best of luck in Detroit. I hear they tolerate guys like you real well up there.

Be sure to write!

Such anger. Rob's already been run through your muck. Anyone else who posts anonymously to your drivel does so to avoid the same. I'd say that is pretty smart of them.

I agree with the other "anonymous" poster. Get back on topic. Nobody but Bill Dennis really cares to hear about Chase Ingersoll's glorious (in his own mind) past.

The council should rename a street after Betty Friedan. How about one of the streets she lived on?
